Introduction
Here we go… Issue Three!
Madness was always portrayed as “Nutty”, and, of course, it had everything to do with their own promotion of their “Nutty Sound” and their infamous “Nutty Train” seen on the “One Step Beyond” album and single sleeves. Ultimately, they were always known for their wacky and crazy behaviour and had always been represented as those bonkers, batty, crackers, scatty, loony, loopy MADNESS!
As we researched this issue, it became more and more apparent why the Nutty Boys became so ingrained in Nutty culture; apart from their crazy antics in their videos and on TV, which in some cases led to them being banned from any future shows, but their presence as comic characters in popular publications from the Beano to Look-In, and even in their own Fan Club Magazine and then you’d find Madness turned into cartoons or variations of Andy Warhol’s pop-art on their own 45 single sleeves.
Madness had closely engaged with fans through the MIS Fan Club. They even ran a ‘Draw To Win’ competition in issue two of The Nutty Boys comic, which elevated the band and comic’s artistic presence.
In the early days, Madness embraced their unique “Nutty Boys” image and sound, but they began to evolve their style as time passed. By 1982, they shifted towards a more serious and sober approach with less emphasis on light-hearted and humorous themes.
This issue is to revive and re-live those crazy comic days of those Nutty Boys – MADNESS!
Enjoy this little piece of Nutty Magic.

Cartoon Madness was a fascinating issue, incorporating the artistic efforts of illustrators and cartoonists from the original fan base as well as commercial and creative artists who contributed to the visual world of Madness. The issue is beautifully presented and organized, and truly transports the reader in time to show how immersed the band was in English popular culture.
