Introduction
Surprise It’s… Issue Two!
I appreciate your patience while waiting for this Japanese issue. It has been a challenging five or six months with my health, but the Madzine is finally in your hands. Hopefully, you’re enjoying this with a hot cup of tea (oh go on have a cup of tea) and some digestives. For those who also received the Madzine (Christmas Pudding edition), you lucky bleeder! Enjoy both publications; you can thank me later.
My passion for Japanese vinyl started in ‘81 with the Grey Day 12”. The fascination still exists for me although it’s sadly something in the past so I’ve had to find new ways to experience those feelings from the 80s and this Madzine is exactly the way to do it.
I am becoming quite good at translating Japanese too eh? … NOT!
A great example of what I am saying about the Japanese pressings is the awesome remix of ‘Don’t Quote Me On That’ on the Grey Day (VIP- 5912) 12”.
The track begins “It’s All Eggs Bacon Beans and a Fried Slice” with an (edited) piano intro then kicks in much the same as the hot biscuit mix with just bass and drums, sax and organ kicks in at 30 seconds, the guitar comes in at 50 seconds, the mix still holds Mikes piano until 1:29 minutes into the track. It ends with “Are you sure…” and echos to fade (no guitar).
The love of vinyl and foreign mixes during a time when there were three known versions of “Don’t Quote Me On That”. I am unsure how well people knew about all three remixes because, over the past 45 years, I have never heard anyone mention the Japanese 12 remix, only the Hot Biscuit 12″ Promo and WR&P EP remixes.
** POP ** Back to reality and 2023!
Enjoy this little piece of homemade Madness.

From cover to cover Issue 2, Japanese Madness is a joyous ride back in time to Madness’s Japanese tours. The photos and advertisements reproduced in this issue are truly fascinating and show the depth of the market for all things Madness in Japan.
